Quick answer. Sometimes, but only for a specific bottle-and-closure pairing. An 18-400 and an 18-415 bottle share a nominal 18 mm diameter, but the finish series differs. AromaTools lists one 18-415 dropper assembly for both of its vial finishes after the glass pipette is adjusted. Oshun lists one 18-415 tamper-evident bottle as accepting 18-400 and 18-415 closures, then warns that its tamper-evident ring excludes some 18-415 closures and that the bottle is too short for a standard 15 ml pipette. These are product-specific claims, not proof that the finish codes are generally interchangeable. [3, 6]

The 18 Is Only Part of the Specification

In a finish code such as 18-400 or 18-415, “18” identifies the nominal neck diameter; the suffix identifies the finish series. Qorpak lists separate dimensions for 18 mm closures in the 400 and 415 series, so the shared diameter alone is not enough to select a closure. [1]

Supplier guidance also shows why blanket answers can mislead. SGSBOTTLE describes the two finishes as non-interchangeable, while AromaTools lists a named assembly for both vial finishes after a pipette adjustment. Oshun gives a second, bottle-specific example: one 18-415 tamper-evident bottle accepts some 18-400 and 18-415 closures, but its ring and bottle height still limit which dropper assembly works. The claims apply to those exact products; they do not set a category-wide rule. [3, 5, 6] Berlin Packaging describes its listed dropper as an 18-400 closure for bottles with an 18-400 finish. [2]

What Can Go Wrong When the Codes Differ

A cap may start onto a neck and still be the wrong match. The thread can engage poorly, the skirt can stop before the intended seating point, or the sealing surface may not compress as designed. For a dropper, the pipette adds another fit question: it must enter through the neck and reach the usable liquid area without being too long for the bottle. A successful first turn is not a seal test.

Bottle capacity is not a reliable substitute for a neck-finish drawing. Two bottles with the same stated capacity can have different shoulder, neck, and internal-height geometry. Pipette length should be checked against the specific bottle and closure assembly rather than inferred from milliliters.

Identify the Bottle Before You Source a Cap

Start with the exact bottle SKU, its supplier drawing, or a written specification. Ask the bottle supplier to confirm the full neck-finish designation, including the diameter and finish series. If you have only a sample, send it to the closure supplier and ask them to identify the finish from the dimensions and drawing. A caliper measurement can help screen a sample, but a single outside-diameter measurement cannot establish the full thread profile and seating geometry.

If a listing or quote says only “18 mm,” ask whether it means 18-400, 18-415, DIN 18, or another finish. Keep the cap and bottle designations in the same written specification. If the supplier proposes a cross-finish fit, request the drawing or compatibility statement for those exact part numbers and verify it on samples.

Qualify the Complete Dropper on Samples

Test the cap, pipette, bulb, liner or sealing feature, and bottle together. Use the actual liquid or a suitable test liquid when checking closure performance. Record the cap and bottle part numbers so the sample result remains tied to the configuration you intend to buy.

CheckPass condition to define
Thread and seatingThe cap starts squarely, turns without forcing or cross-threading, and reaches its designed seated position.
Seal contactThe liner, plug, or sealing surface contacts the intended bottle area. Check for wobble, visible gaps, and leakage using a buyer-defined test.
Pipette reachThe pipette enters freely and reaches the usable liquid without being blocked by the shoulder or pressed hard against the bottom.
Repeated handlingOpen and close several sample units using the intended filling and use process. Look for damaged threads, loose seating, or changes in the seal.

There is no universal pass value for hand-tightening force, leak duration, or pipette clearance that can be applied to every bottle and liquid. Agree on a practical acceptance method with the supplier, then repeat it if the bottle, closure, liner, pipette, or liquid changes.

What to Put in the Request for Quotation

Send the bottle drawing or a physical sample with this request:

“Please quote a complete dropper assembly for bottle [SKU], specified as [full neck finish]. Confirm the finish code on the cap drawing and whether the assembly is designed for this exact bottle. State the pipette length, material, sealing feature, available sample quantity, and MOQ. Please send samples for a fit and leak trial before production.”

A Current 18-415 Sourcing Candidate

Alibaba’s listing describes Product ID 1600102919443 as an 18/415 bamboo dropper cap with a glass pipette. Treat it as a candidate for a bottle whose finish is confirmed as 18-415; the listing title alone does not establish compatibility with a particular bottle, pipette reach, seal performance, or current commercial terms.
